On September 25, 2022, Jose Abrego-Guardado, a 47-year-old resident of Mendota, California, was tragically shot to death. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, around 3:30 a.m., on the 600 block of S. Kate Street. Mendota police officers responded to reports of gunfire and discovered Abrego-Guardado along with another victim, 24-year-old Wilmer Navarro, both of whom were declared dead at the scene.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the two victims knew each other, but the circumstances leading to the shooting remained unclear.
The Mendota Police Department requested the assistance of the Fresno County Sheriff's Office homicide detectives to take over the investigation due to the severity of the case. Detectives and members of the Crime Scene Unit collected evidence from the scene and began canvassing the area for potential leads. They appealed to the public for any video surveillance footage from nearby businesses and residences that might have captured the suspect(s) or any suspicious activity around the time of the shooting.
Despite the efforts of law enforcement, no immediate arrests were made, and the investigation continued.
