In the cold of a January day in Auburn, New York, a life was abruptly and violently ended within the stone walls of Auburn Prison. Archibald Benedict, a 53-year-old male guard, was overseeing the inmates when a seemingly minor disciplinary action escalated into a fatal confrontation. On January 9, 1901, a day that would otherwise have been lost to history, became the last day of Guard Benedict's life.
