The investigation into Rothenberg's death pointed to two notorious figures in the
criminal underworld: Roy DeMeo and Nino Gaggi. Authorities suspected that Rothenberg was murdered because he was believed to be cooperating with law enforcement. His death was an early example of the ruthlessness of the DeMeo crew, a faction of the Gambino crime family known for their violent methods. Gaggi had ordered DeMeo to carry out the murder, which became the first of many attributed to DeMeo's crew.
