In the winter of 2009, in Syracuse, New York, the life of 29-year-old Timothy J. Gordon Jr., a White male, was tragically cut short. Gordon, a dedicated cab driver for City Taxi Co., was known for his friendly nature. On the cold night of January 30, 2009, he picked up two passengers, Denny DeJesus and Eduardo Trinidad. Their intention was to rob him and evade the fare. As they drove along Summit Avenue, this plan took a violent turn when Gordon was shot in the head.
Despite his grievous injury, Gordon managed to drive away before crashing his taxi. He was rushed to University Hospital but succumbed to his injuries the following day, January 31, 2009.
The investigation into Gordon's murder led to the arrests of Denny DeJesus, Eduardo Trinidad, and a third individual, 19-year-old Chucky Phillips. A grand jury indicted DeJesus and Trinidad on charges of second-degree murder, first-degree attempted robbery, and criminal possession of a weapon. The prosecution put forth that the three men had conspired to rob Gordon. It was revealed that after planning to not pay the fare, the situation escalated to a robbery that ultimately ended in murder over a fare of just twenty dollars and a few hundred dollars.
During the legal proceedings, it was Denny DeJesus who identified Chucky Phillips as the one who fired the fatal shot. DeJesus also testified that it was Trinidad who had passed the gun to Phillips. In a plea deal, Chucky Phillips pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a reduced sentence of twenty years in prison. Denny DeJesus pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and was sentenced to fifteen years in prison for his cooperation with the prosecution. Eduardo Trinidad, however, maintained his innocence and chose to go to trial. He was subsequently convicted of murder, attempted robbery, and criminal possession of a weapon and was sentenced to twenty-five years for the murder and an additional fifteen years for the weapon charge.
