In the spring of 2013, a single act of violence tragically cut short the life of Jason L. Oates, a 32-year-old male residing in Rome, New York. On the evening of Thursday, March 28, 2013, the sound of gunfire shattered the peace in the rear parking lot of the Rome YMCA on West Bloomfield Street. When police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Oates unresponsive, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
Originally from Alabama, he was known to friends by the nickname 'Clutch' and had been living a short distance from where his life was taken.
The investigation into the death of Jason Oates was immediately treated as a homicide. Witnesses reported seeing a male, clad in a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt with the hood pulled up, running from the parking lot. This individual was seen fleeing south on Stevens Street and then heading westbound on West Thomas Street. Despite this lead, the motive for the killing did not appear to be robbery, adding a layer of complexity to the case.
To date, the murder of Jason Oates remains unsolved, and no arrests have been made in connection with his death. The Rome Police Department, in partnership with Mohawk Valley Crime Stoppers, has sought assistance from the public to bring closure to the case.
