Zain Lodhi was a 9-year-old boy from Pleasant Valley, New York, in a Pakistani-American family whose lives unraveled in a matter of hours in late November 2013. By the time daylight settled over Dutchess County, state police would come to describe what happened as a murder-suicide driven from inside the home, leaving no stranger to hunt, no fugitive to chase—only a stunned community trying to understand how an ordinary morning could turn so final.
The first horror surfaced around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 21, 2013, when authorities were led to a vehicle parked at the A&P plaza in Pleasant Valley. Inside were the bodies of Abbas Lodhi and his younger son, Zain. Not long after, investigators went to the family’s residence and found Zain’s older brother shot to death there as well. Police said a shotgun believed to be the weapon was recovered from inside the vehicle, and they later stated that Abbas and the boys had been shot in the chest.
Even as the scene at the plaza was being processed, another absence weighed over the investigation: the children’s mother, Sarwat Lodhi, was missing. Police said evidence connected to her vehicle and the unfolding timeline suggested she was gravely wounded, and the search widened with urgency. On Friday, November 22, 2013, a grim discovery ended any remaining hope—her body was found beside Route 376 in Wappingers Falls, roughly 13 miles south of Pleasant Valley, after a man checking an empty home that had been up for sale noticed her in the brush.
Investigators identified Abbas Lodhi as the only suspect and said he first shot Sarwat in Wappingers Falls, then killed the two children and himself. Because the suspected shooter was dead, there were no arrests, no criminal charges filed against a living defendant, and no trial—only an investigation focused on piecing together motive and sequence from what was left behind. Police said they did not find a note, and while they continued looking for what might have triggered the violence, the official conclusion remained that the deaths were the result of a family murder-suicide.
