In the early morning hours of a Sunday in August 2014, the life of 29-year-old Francisco Mercedez was tragically cut short in a sudden act of violence in the Hamilton Heights neighborhood of Manhattan. A resident of Highbridge in the Bronx, Mercedez was standing outside a deli on Broadway near West 151st Street when the fatal encounter unfolded at approximately 3:00 a.m.
He was not alone; with him was 21-year-old Kenny Jimenez, a resident of the block where the shooting occurred.
The two men were ambushed when a white sedan pulled up, and an individual opened fire. Mercedez was struck in the back by a bullet. Emergency services rushed him to Harlem Hospital Center, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Jimenez suffered a gunshot wound to the neck and was declared dead at the scene. The suddenness of the attack left friends and the local community in shock, as they gathered for a vigil, lighting candles and sharing memories of the two young men.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the New York Police Department launched an investigation into the double homicide. Detectives released surveillance footage to the public in the hopes of identifying the person responsible. The video captured a suspect wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt, camouflage shorts, and white sneakers, as well as the white four-door sedan used as a getaway vehicle.
Despite the efforts of law enforcement and the pleas of the victims' families for justice, the case grew cold. Months after the incident, reports indicated that no arrests had been made, and the shooter remained at large. The investigation into the deaths of Francisco Mercedez and Kenny Jimenez has not publicly yielded any suspects or resolutions in the years that have followed, leaving a painful and unanswered void for their loved ones and the community.
