A gathering of family and friends at a 50th birthday party in Stratford, Connecticut, turned tragic in the early morning hours of August 13, 2017, ending in the shooting death of 27-year-old Raenetta Catchings, a Black female and mother of three. The festive occasion dissolved into a verbal argument that spilled out into the street in front of a North Avenue home.
Amid the escalating tensions, Michael "Buddha" Catchings, the 21-year-old uncle of Raenetta, became involved in the dispute.
Witnesses reported that Raenetta was attempting to intervene in an argument between her boyfriend, Marc Elliott, and her uncle when Michael Catchings drew a firearm. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, voices were reportedly heard yelling, "Buddha, Buddha, no!". However, two gunshots rang out. Raenetta Catchings was struck in the chest and her boyfriend was wounded in the abdomen. Both were transported to Bridgeport Hospital, where Raenetta was pronounced dead. Her boyfriend survived his injuries.
Following an intense investigation by the Stratford Police Department, Michael Catchings turned himself in to authorities. He was subsequently charged with a litany of offenses, including first-degree manslaughter with a firearm and first-degree assault. The family, who was initially reluctant to cooperate with the investigation, later expressed that they did not want Michael prosecuted for homicide, highlighting the close, sibling-like relationship he had with his niece. According to some accounts, Michael Catchings had intervened to protect his niece during the argument with her boyfriend, but tragically shot her by accident.
In January 2020, Michael Catchings pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter with a firearm and first-degree assault. At his sentencing in March 2020, an emotional Catchings expressed remorse for his actions. The victim's mother, who is also Michael's sister, stated in court that she forgave her brother. A judge, describing the case as heartbreaking, sentenced Michael Catchings to 25 years in prison for the death of his niece.
