Late on March 26, 2016, Jibran Martinez, 33, a Latino man, was driving westbound on Interstate 10 in New Orleans when the night turned violent in an instant. Just after 9:30 p.m., reports of gunfire crackled in, and responding officers found him unresponsive behind the wheel of a silver, late-model Toyota 4Runner near the Interstate 610 split. The vehicle’s driver side and windshield were riddled with bullet holes, and Martinez had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
Paramedics tried to save him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving the highway shoulder lit by emergency strobes and unanswered questions.
Inside the SUV, two other people had also been caught in the chaos. A 35-year-old man seated in the front passenger seat was hit in the left shoulder and rushed to a hospital for treatment. He later told investigators that he heard gunfire and the shattering of glass but could not see where the shots were coming from. A third person, asleep in the back seat, jolted awake to the sound of bullets striking the vehicle—then noticed an unknown man run toward another vehicle positioned ahead of the 4Runner before fleeing. That fleeting glimpse became one of the few concrete threads in the immediate aftermath, a shadowy figure vanishing into the night as quickly as the shots had erupted.
In the days that followed, detectives publicly appealed for help identifying whoever was responsible. The information released at the time did not name a suspect, describe a vehicle to look for, or announce any arrests, and officials noted that additional details had not been made public. What remained was a narrow window of circumstances: a moving vehicle struck by gunfire on a major interstate, survivors who heard more than they saw, and a killer—or killers—who disappeared before police arrived.
