In April 2017, a domestic argument tragically escalated into the violent death of 37-year-old Regina Flecha. The chain of events began with a dispute between Flecha and her boyfriend, Eric Bermudez, at their home on Black Pine Court in Dix Hills, a community near Huntington Station, New York. Following the argument, Flecha left the residence on foot.
Bermudez, however, pursued her in his vehicle.
He located her a short distance away on Burroughs Avenue and, in a brutal act of violence, shot her multiple times. After the shooting, Bermudez forced Flecha into his car and fled the scene. The grim reality of his actions came to light approximately 20 minutes later and seven miles away in Bay Shore.
Two Suffolk County detectives, initially unaware of the homicide, pulled Bermudez over for speeding. Upon approaching the vehicle, they made the horrific discovery of Regina Flecha in the passenger seat, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency services were immediately called, and Flecha was rushed to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.
Eric Bermudez, then 36, was arrested at the scene of the traffic stop. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder. Following his arrest, the legal process moved forward, leading to his trial. In March 2018, a jury found Eric Bermudez guilty of the murder of Regina Flecha. He was also convicted on several counts of criminal possession of a weapon. For the murder conviction, he faced a potential sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
