On a summer evening in Theresa, New York, 36-year-old male, Joel Davis, a New York State Trooper, responded to a domestic disturbance call that tragically ended his life. On July 9, 2017, Trooper Davis was the first to arrive at a residence following reports of shots being fired. As he approached the home, he was fatally shot by Justin Walters, a U.S. Army soldier stationed at nearby Fort Drum. The single gunshot struck Trooper Davis in an area not protected by his body armor. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wound.
The events leading to Trooper Davis's death began earlier that evening when Walters, in a fit of rage, shot and killed his 27-year-old wife, Nichole Walters, inside their home. Another woman on the property was also shot and wounded but survived. When Trooper Davis arrived, he was attempting to make contact when he was gunned down. Following the shootings, a massive law enforcement response converged on the scene, and Justin Walters eventually surrendered to other troopers without further incident.
In the aftermath of the deadly encounter, Justin Walters was arrested and faced a series of serious charges. He was indicted for the first-degree murder of Trooper Joel Davis and the second-degree murder of his wife, Nichole Walters, in addition to other offenses related to the wounding of the third victim. During his trial, Walters' defense team argued that he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and alcoholism, which they claimed led to his violent actions. However, the jury rejected this defense and found him guilty on all counts.
