On a Tuesday afternoon in October of 2018, the life of 31-year-old Hispanic male, Emmanuel Correa-Villegas, was tragically cut short on a street in Buffalo, New York. The fatal encounter unfolded near the intersection of Letchworth and Dart Streets, where Correa-Villegas was shot. The bustling neighborhood, in close proximity to the Buffalo State College campus, became the scene of a homicide that would eventually lead investigators on an international pursuit.
In the aftermath of the
shooting, the Buffalo Police Department launched an intensive investigation to identify and apprehend the person responsible for Emmanuel Correa-Villegas's death. Their efforts, in conjunction with the U.S. Marshals Violent Felony Task Force, pointed to a single suspect: Hommys Rivera-Lopez. However, by the time authorities had zeroed in on him, Rivera-Lopez had fled the mainland United States in an attempt to evade capture, seeking refuge in Puerto Rico.
The arm of the law proved to be long, as U.S. Marshals successfully located and apprehended Rivera-Lopez in Puerto Rico. He was extradited back to Buffalo in September of 2019 to face the American justice system. The Erie County District Attorney's Office brought forth an indictment, charging him with Murder in the Second Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree. Initially facing the prospect of a lengthy prison sentence if convicted on the murder charge, Rivera-Lopez's legal journey took a turn. In April of 2021, he agreed to a plea deal, admitting his guilt to a lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter. This admission brought a close to the legal proceedings, and on May 26, 2021, Hommys Rivera-Lopez was sentenced for the shooting death of Emmanuel Correa-Villegas, facing a maximum of 25 years in prison.
