On an August morning in 2019, the life of 43-year-old Mtundu Vanterpool was brought to a violent and tragic end in his Southampton home on the Shinnecock reservation. The events that culminated in his death began hours earlier at a gas station in Holtsville, where he had an altercation with Michael Gaines. Following this confrontation, Vanterpool returned to the home he shared with his fiancée and went to sleep.
