On an August morning in 2019, the life of 43-year-old Mtundu Vanterpool was brought to a violent and tragic end in his Southampton home on the Shinnecock reservation. The events that culminated in his death began hours earlier at a gas station in Holtsville, where he had an altercation with Michael Gaines. Following this confrontation, Vanterpool returned to the home he shared with his fiancée and went to sleep.
In the pre-dawn hours of August 16th, the peace of their home was
shattered. Gaines broke into the residence, entered the couple's bedroom, and shot Vanterpool three times in the abdomen. His fiancée, in a desperate attempt to save him, immediately called for help and administered aid, but his injuries were too severe, and he died in her arms.
Following the shooting, Gaines fled the scene, sparking a manhunt that ended two days later with his apprehension in North Carolina. He was brought back to New York to face justice for his actions. After a three-week jury trial in January 2022, Michael Gaines, then 44, was convicted of one count of murder and two counts of burglary. For the murder, he was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison, with additional 25-year sentences for each of the burglary counts.
