In the late afternoon of March 24, 2021, a burst of violence shattered the daytime calm of a busy downtown Port Jefferson street, leaving 25-year-old David Bliss Jr. of Shirley fatally wounded. The shooting occurred around 3:35 p.m. in front of 122 Main Street. Responding officers discovered Bliss on the ground with a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to St. Charles Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Eyewitnesses reported that Bliss had been involved in an argument with individuals in a car just before the shooting. It appeared to be a targeted attack rather than a random act of violence.
The investigation into the death of the man his mother described as her 'beautiful, loving, caring, blue-eyed boy' swiftly led to a suspect. Just three days after the shooting, on March 27, Suffolk County Police arrested 19-year-old Joseph Garcia of Port Jefferson Station. Garcia was subsequently charged with second-degree murder. The case against him was built on a combination of eyewitness accounts and surveillance footage. Video evidence reportedly captured Garcia shooting Bliss and then leaving the scene in a vehicle.
Further surveillance footage from a residence in Setauket, recorded approximately 10 minutes after the incident, allegedly showed Garcia with a firearm and making admissions about the shooting. Shockingly, he was reportedly seen joking about the murder on this footage. In April 2021, a grand jury indicted Garcia on charges of second-degree murder, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and second-degree criminal contempt.
Joseph Garcia's trial concluded in April 2022 with a jury finding him guilty on all counts. Prosecutors revealed during the trial that the fatal encounter began as a verbal dispute while Bliss was picking up a pizza and that Garcia and Bliss did not know each other. Video presented at trial showed Garcia firing his weapon at Bliss and attempting to fire at least two more times before the gun apparently jammed. For the murder of David Bliss Jr., Garcia was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison. The District Attorney remarked on the senselessness of the act, noting that Garcia later joked about it as if the victim's life had no value.
