Joel Northrup, a 26-year-old male from Kenmore, New York, was shot and killed on the evening of August 30, 2021, at the Delaware Park basketball courts. The incident, which police described as a 'targeted' killing, occurred while a large crowd was present at the courts.
Northrup, a devoted father to his two young sons with a
third child on the way, was remembered by loved ones as an amazing father who would have never wanted his children to grow up without him. Having lost his own parents at a young age, the tragedy of his children facing a similar fate was particularly poignant for his family. His family and friends described him as an 'angel' who enjoyed life and was dedicated to his children.
The investigation into Northrup's death was immediately launched by the Buffalo Police Department. Investigators believed there may have been an argument or fight at the park the day before the shooting and were reviewing social media videos to determine if it was related. Despite the presence of numerous witnesses, police officials called for more community cooperation in the investigation.
As of late 2022, the homicide remained unsolved, causing ongoing frustration and pain for Northrup's family as they continued to seek justice. The shooting happened in front of an estimated 100 people, yet a 'no snitching' culture was cited by some as a potential obstacle to witnesses coming forward. Northrup's family has emphasized that he was not involved in a street lifestyle and held a regular job. A reward of $7,500 was offered by Crime Stoppers for any information that would lead to an arrest in the case.
