Amelia Laguerre, a 33-year-old woman, was fatally shot on March 31, 2022, in a parking garage at her workplace in New Hyde Park, New York. A mother to a young son, Laguerre was a dedicated employee at Northwell Health for a decade. Her life was cut short in an act of violence perpetrated by her ex-fiancé, Quay Sean Hines, then 33, of Bay Shore.
The couple had been in a tumultuous on-again, off-again relationship for several years. When Laguerre decided to end the relationship for good, Hines became obsessive. His behavior escalated to stalking, and he was even accused of breaking into her apartment and burning her clothes. In the weeks leading up to the fatal shooting, Hines had reportedly become increasingly violent and abusive.
On that tragic afternoon, Hines lay in wait for Laguerre in the underground parking garage of her office building. As she entered the garage, he ambushed her, shooting her nine times before fleeing the scene. Laguerre was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries. An investigation swiftly pointed to Hines, who was arrested on April 8, 2022. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
Hines' trial began in September 2024, and after a deliberation of less than two hours, a jury found him guilty on all charges. In November 2024, he was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison. During the sentencing, the judge addressed Hines directly, showing him a photo of Laguerre's son and stating that he had stolen her from the boy and her family. Amelia's mother also gave a heart-wrenching victim impact statement, telling Hines, 'Sean, you were supposed to love Amelia, but instead you took her life.' Hines showed no remorse during the proceedings.
