A mother and her two young sons are murdered in their home In the early morning hours of March 10, 2017, a horrific scene unfolded inside a home in the Gentilly neighborhood of New Orleans. Six-year-old Jumyrin Smith, a young male, was found shot to death in his bedroom. The tranquility of the night was shattered by gunfire that claimed the lives of not only Jumyrin, but also his 30-year-old mother, Monique Smith, and his 10-year-old brother, Justin Simms.
The three were discovered by police who responded to a call of a shooting at the residence on the corner of Mandolin and Touro streets at approximately 5 a.m.
The young family had moved into the neighborhood about a year prior to the tragic event. In what was described as a brutal and heart-wrenching crime, both Jumyrin and his brother were found in their beds, having been shot while they were likely asleep. Monique Smith was also found deceased inside the home. A fourth victim, Jumyrin's 12-year-old sister, A'miya, was also shot but miraculously survived the attack. She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery.
In the wake of the devastating loss, family members were overcome with grief. Jumyrin's father, who was separated from his mother and living in Mississippi at the time, expressed immense guilt and sorrow over not being there to protect his family. The New Orleans Police Department launched an investigation into the triple homicide, with the police chief describing the scene as one that 'breaks everybody's heart.'
Despite the initial shock and public pleas for information, the case has remained unsolved. As of the latest available reports, no arrests have been made, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or a motive for the killings. A cash reward was offered by Crimestoppers for any information that would lead to an arrest, but the perpetrator or perpetrators responsible for the deaths of Jumyrin Smith, his mother, and his brother have yet to be brought to justice. The investigation remains open.
