In a moment of escalating tension that tragically turned fatal, Sydney Lugo, a 24-year-old Black woman, was shot and killed on the morning of August 1, 2022, in the South Ozone Park neighborhood of Queens, New York. The incident unfolded around 9:30 a.m. in front of her residence on 109th Avenue, near 120th Street. Lugo had been engaged in a heated argument with a man whom she had been allowing to stay with her temporarily.
The dispute, reportedly over financial matters, reached a
devastating climax when the man, identified as 34-year-old Tariek Sykes, allegedly pulled out a 9mm pistol and fired at Lugo. The single gunshot struck her in the arm and chest. Emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene and transported Lugo to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
Following the shooting, Sykes was promptly taken into custody by officers from the 106th Precinct. He was arrested at the scene without resistance, and a 9mm pistol was recovered. Sykes, who was described as homeless, was subsequently charged with murder in the second degree and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
The Queens District Attorney's Office announced the charges against Sykes, highlighting the senseless nature of the violence that stemmed from a verbal dispute. Neighbors reported that arguments between Lugo and Sykes were not uncommon. While police do not believe the two were in a romantic relationship, they had a volatile dynamic. Sykes was arraigned in Queens Criminal Court and ordered to return to court on August 5, 2022. If convicted of the charges, he faces a potential sentence of up to 25 years to life in prison.
