On a late summer evening in Stony Point, New York, a domestic argument set in motion a tragic chain of events that would end a life. On September 18, 2022, Jason Colwell, a 47-year-old male, was fatally shot. The incident began earlier in the day with a dispute between Colwell and his wife. Following the argument, his wife left their Garnerville home and sought refuge at a friend's residence on Mott Farm Road.
Later that night, around 11:30 p.m., Colwell went to the Mott Farm Road house,
reportedly looking for his wife. He entered the home uninvited, leading to a confrontation with a resident, 21-year-old Javier Medina Jr. During this altercation, Medina shot Colwell in the chest with a shotgun. Police were summoned to the scene by a woman in the house who reported the shooting. When they arrived, they found Jason Colwell deceased inside the home.
Javier Medina Jr. remained at the scene, along with three women and four children who were in another part of the house and were unharmed. The shotgun used in the shooting was recovered by investigators. Medina was taken into custody and subsequently charged with second-degree murder. He was held without bail at the Rockland County Jail.
The investigation into the shooting was extensive, involving the Stony Point Police Department, the Rockland County Sheriff's Office, and the Rockland County District Attorney's Office. After a thorough review of the evidence, which included witness interviews and analysis of video surveillance and cell phone data, the case was presented to a grand jury. The Rockland County grand jury ultimately voted to dismiss the second-degree murder charge against Javier Medina, and the prosecution of the case was concluded.
