In the quiet community of Mount Airy, Maryland, the life of 50-year-old Donna Louise Laudick came to a tragic end on the evening of Wednesday, October 7, 2015. That night, deputies from the Frederick County Sheriff's Office responded to a distressing 911 call from her husband, Robert Glen Laudick, who calmly informed the dispatcher, 'I killed my wife and I shot myself in the chest.'
Upon their arrival at the family's home on Charles Drive, authorities discovered Donna Laudick deceased from a gunshot wound. Her 50-year-old husband was found critically injured from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was transported to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.
The motive behind the harrowing events appeared to be intertwined with a dark secret Robert Laudick was harboring. Just a day before the shooting, he had been released on bail after being indicted on charges of sexually abusing a minor. In a display of spousal support, Donna had accompanied her husband to his bail hearing, speaking on his behalf and helping to secure his release for a $75,000 bond. The day after he returned home, the fatal shooting occurred. Investigators later uncovered more than 1,600 images of child pornography on his password-protected laptop, leading to over 100 additional charges.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Robert Laudick survived his suicide attempt and faced a litany of charges for the death of his wife. An arrest warrant was issued, charging him with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and the use of a firearm in the commission of a violent crime. In September 2016, Robert Laudick pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, as well as to a third-degree sex offense and possession of child pornography. Despite his attempt to frame the incident as a murder-suicide pact, a claim prosecutors never believed, he was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years. He also received concurrent sentences of 10 years for the sex offense and five years for the child pornography charges.
