On a Friday night in Edgewater, Maryland, what began as a social gathering ended in a tragic loss of life. Devin Alexander Hayes, a 24-year-old man from Pasadena, was attending a party at a townhome on Dawnwood Drive on August 11, 2017. It was there that the evening took a fatal turn.
The host of the party, 45-year-old Russell Robert Ramey, opened fire, fatally wounding Devin Alexander Hayes.
The violent encounter unfolded within the garage of the residence where the party was taking place. Shortly after shooting Hayes, Ramey turned the gun on himself, ending his own life in an apparent murder-suicide.
When Anne Arundel County Police arrived at the scene around 10:45 p.m., they discovered both Hayes and Ramey deceased from gunshot wounds. Homicide detectives were called to investigate the grim scene. While the authorities determined the sequence of events, the motive for the shooting and the nature of the relationship between Hayes and Ramey were not immediately clear. Investigators continued to piece together the circumstances that led to the deadly confrontation. Both bodies were sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsies to officially determine the causes of death.
