On a quiet Saturday afternoon, just two days before Christmas in 2017, a dispute between neighbors in Nanjemoy, Maryland, turned deadly, claiming the life of 35-year-old Wayne Lee Proctor Jr. The tragic events unfolded on December 23rd, when Marcus Darnell Johnson, then 33, went to Proctor's home on Bowie Road to confront him about a thirty-dollar debt. The argument, which began outside of the residence, quickly escalated.
Proctor's wife and children were present during the heated exchange.
As the confrontation intensified, Johnson brandished a handgun. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation and protect his family, Proctor, his wife, and their children went back inside their home and closed the door. In a senseless act of violence, Johnson then fired multiple shots at the door. Proctor was struck in the chest and abdomen. The bullets pierced his heart, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene, his life cut short in the doorway of his own home.
Immediately following the shooting, Johnson fled into a nearby wooded area. The Charles County Sheriff's Office responded to the report of a shooting and quickly established a perimeter. A police K9 unit was deployed to track the suspect. Their efforts were successful, and Johnson was located and taken into custody shortly after the incident. He was arrested and subsequently charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and other related charges. Johnson was held at the Charles County Detention Center without bond.
In August 2018, following a six-day trial, a Charles County jury convicted Marcus Darnell Johnson of second-degree murder and six counts of reckless endangerment. On October 25, 2018, a judge sentenced Johnson to 64 years in prison for the murder of his neighbor. The tragic death of Wayne Lee Proctor Jr., a husband and father, over a small debt, left his family and the community to grapple with a profound and senseless loss.
