In the summer of 2018, a heart-wrenching event unfolded in La Plata, Maryland, ending the life of a three-year-old girl named Maddie Sabre Davis. On the evening of July 1st, family members grew worried when Maddie was not returned home at the scheduled time of 6:30 p.m. following a court-ordered visit with her father, 33-year-old Brian Duncan Davis.
Their concern prompted a search, which tragically led them to his pickup truck parked at Gilbert Run Park.
Upon their arrival at the park on Charles Street around 7:35 p.m., after being notified by the concerned family, Charles County police officers discovered a devastating scene. Inside the pickup truck, they found both Maddie and her father, Brian, deceased. The investigation that followed determined that Brian Davis had shot and killed his young daughter before taking his own life. A handgun was recovered from within the vehicle, confirming the cause of the tragic murder-suicide.
The community was left to mourn the loss of a vibrant young girl who was remembered for her big blue eyes and cheerful disposition, for whom everything was 'a sunny rainbow day.' Reports indicated that her parents were separated, and though her father had visitation rights at the time of her death, there had been a past protective order against him. The devastating conclusion to this family outing left behind a trail of sorrow and unanswered questions as to what led a father to commit such a final and desperate act. As the perpetrator of the murder was also deceased, the investigation concluded without any arrests.
