In the early morning hours of September 30, 2018, a promising young Black man named Abdoulie Jallow, 24, had his life cut short in a burst of senseless violence in downtown Baltimore. Jallow, who was visiting the city from Montgomery County, was with friends outside Club Oxygen near the intersection of South Calvert and Redwood Street when a dispute erupted.
The verbal altercation escalated, with a man who would later be identified as Karaca Hyman issuing a chilling promise to the crowd: 'I'll be back, I got something for you.'
True to his word, Hyman returned a short time later, driving a green, four-door BMW. As Jallow crossed the street, Hyman struck him with the vehicle. When Jallow approached the driver's side door of the car, Hyman fired a handgun, striking him four times in the chest and arms. The driver then sped away, leaving Jallow lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead. The entire horrific incident was captured on CCTV footage, providing investigators with crucial evidence.
The investigation quickly gained momentum. Later that night, Hyman's BMW was discovered parked and engulfed in flames in the 1300 block of East Oliver Street. With the help of the FBI, Baltimore Police detectives were able to identify the car as registered to Karaca Hyman. Further investigation, including cell phone data, placed Hyman at the scene of the shooting and just blocks from where his car was found burning. He was arrested on November 8, 2018.
At his trial, Hyman admitted to the shooting but claimed he acted in self-defense. The jury, however, was not convinced and in September 2019, found him guilty of second-degree murder and use of a firearm in a crime of violence. In November 2019, Karaca Hyman was sentenced to 55 years in prison for the murder of Abdoulie Jallow, a young man remembered by friends and family for his infectious smile and loving personality.
