On October 31, 2018, 32-year-old Michelle Lyn Bucalo, a Caucasian female, was killed in her Severn, Maryland home. The tragic event unfolded when her father, Donald John Bucalo, then 62, called 911 to report that he had shot his daughter. When Anne Arundel County Police officers arrived at the residence on Twin Oaks Road, they found Donald sitting on the front porch. Inside, they discovered Michelle suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite the efforts of fire department personnel, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Michelle's death revealed a history of struggles related to her mental illness. Once a paralegal, she had lost her job due to her condition, which was reportedly deteriorating. Her father expressed that he was terrified by her mental illness and had shot her while she was sleeping, believing it was the only way to protect his family from her violent outbursts. This was not a random act of violence but a targeted event within the family home.
Donald John Bucalo was taken into custody without incident and subsequently charged with first- and second-degree murder. The case drew significant attention as it highlighted the tragic complexities that can arise from untreated mental illness. Ultimately, Donald Bucalo entered an open plea to second-degree murder. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with 10 years suspended, and received credit for two and a half years of time served. This sentence made him eligible for parole in five years. The first-degree murder charge was dismissed as part of the plea agreement. During the sentencing, the state's attorney noted that the victim was blamed for her own death by family and friends, who viewed her killing as the only solution.
