In the spring of 2020, a tragic event unfolded in a Chillum, Maryland apartment building that claimed the life of a young woman. On the evening of April 10th, emergency services responded to a fire at a second-floor apartment on Highview Terrace. Inside, firefighters made a grim discovery; the body of 23-year-old Zena Nichols was found in a bedroom, suffering from severe burns.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initially appearing as a fatal fire, the case took a darker turn following an autopsy. The medical examiner determined that Zena Nichols had been shot multiple times, and her death was ruled a homicide. The investigation quickly focused on 42-year-old Jerome John Harris, the resident of the apartment where Nichols was found. Authorities revealed that Harris and Nichols had been in a relationship. It is believed that Harris shot Nichols before intentionally setting the fire in an attempt to conceal the murder.
Following the incident, Jerome John Harris fled the scene. The Prince George's County Police Department promptly issued an arrest warrant for him, with charges including first and second-degree murder, arson, and assault. A significant reward was offered for information leading to his capture. The manhunt for Harris concluded a few days later when he was apprehended in Brooklyn, New York, on April 14, 2020. He was held in New York awaiting extradition to Prince George's County to face the charges against him in connection with the death of Zena Nichols.
