In the early morning hours of July 16, 2021, a seemingly routine single-vehicle crash on Tippett Road in Clinton, Maryland, took a grim and unexpected turn. First responders arriving at the scene discovered the driver, 41-year-old Enemias Barrera Grijalva of Fort Washington, suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, the male victim succumbed to his injuries a short time later, turning a traffic incident into a homicide investigation.
The preliminary
investigation into the death of Enemias Barrera Grijalva quickly revealed that the fatal encounter was not a random act of violence. Authorities determined that the victim had been shot by someone he knew following a dispute. This led investigators to identify a suspect in the case.
Within days of the fatal shooting, the Prince George's County Police Department's Homicide Unit made an arrest. Forty-two-year-old Carlos Villanueva, from Brandywine, was taken into custody and charged with the murder of Enemias Barrera Grijalva. The charges brought against Villanueva included first and second-degree murder, as well as other related offenses. Following his arrest, he was held at the Department of Corrections on a no-bond status.
