In the quiet town of Pittsville, Maryland, a dedicated law enforcement officer's life was tragically cut short in the line of duty. Deputy First Class Glenn Hilliard of the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office, a 41-year-old male, was a 16-year veteran of law enforcement. He had served with the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office for six years and had previously been with the Berlin Police Department for a decade.
A husband and a father to three children, he was known as a dedicated public servant.
On the evening of Sunday, June 12, 2022, Deputy Hilliard was on patrol when he spotted a man wanted on multiple felony warrants from several jurisdictions leaving an apartment complex on Gumboro Road. The suspect was identified as Austin Jacob Allen Davidson. As Hilliard attempted to apprehend him, Davidson fled on foot, prompting a chase. During the pursuit, the suspect opened fire on Deputy Hilliard, fatally wounding him. Hilliard was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. He would have celebrated his 42nd birthday just a few days later.
Following the shooting, an extensive manhunt was launched by numerous law enforcement agencies from the surrounding areas. The suspect, Austin Davidson, was captured later that night. He was subsequently charged with first and second-degree murder, first and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and the use of a firearm in the commission of a violent crime.
In May 2023, after a six-day trial, a jury found Austin Davidson guilty on all 11 counts against him. These charges included first-degree murder, second-degree murder, burglary, and multiple firearm-related offenses. Following his conviction, Davidson was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, with an additional 66 consecutive years.
