Warden Pressley Reeves, a 24-year-old white male, served his community as a dedicated game warden. On the evening of September 22, 1908, as dusk settled over the fields, Reeves was on his way home.
He was driving his wagon after having transported a group of cotton pickers. Along a lonely stretch of road, an assassin lay in wait, concealed by the roadside. A single blast from a shotgun, loaded with buckshot, rang out in the twilight, and Warden Reeves was struck in the head. His life ended abruptly in the very community he had sworn to protect. The mules, startled but familiar with their path, continued onward, pulling the wagon bearing their fallen master back to his family's farm. It was there that his father made the horrific discovery of his son's body.
In the aftermath of the murder, the investigation struggled to gain traction. Reeves was known for his stringent enforcement of fish and game laws, particularly his efforts to stop illegal trapping and poaching.
