In the quiet community of Bradley, South Carolina, a horrific act of violence unfolded, claiming the life of 11-year-old Tariq Kenyon Robinson. On October 29, 2013, Tariq, his 9-year-old brother William Asa Robinson, their aunt Chandra Marie Fields, and their grandparents, Richard and Melissa Fields, were all tragically killed in their home on Callison Highway.
The male perpetrator was identified as Bryan Sweatt, who was also found deceased at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The events of that evening were set in motion by a domestic dispute. Sweatt, who was the father of Chandra Fields' 7-month-old child, had become enraged over his lack of access to the infant. Armed with a gun belonging to Richard Fields, Sweatt went to the family's home. What followed was a devastating mass murder-suicide that left a family and a community shattered. Two other children who were present in the home at the time of the shooting were spared and managed to flee to a neighbor's house to seek help.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, law enforcement officials confirmed the identities of the victims and the shooter. The investigation revealed that Sweatt had called 911 moments before the killings, warning that he was going to harm himself. By the time authorities arrived, the five victims and Sweatt were already deceased. The case was closed as a murder-suicide, with Bryan Sweatt being the sole person responsible for the deaths of Tariq Kenyon Robinson and his family members. The community mourned the senseless loss of life, particularly that of the two young boys whose futures were so violently cut short.
