On a tragic day in Bradley, South Carolina, the life of 51-year-old Richard Allen Fields, a male, was cut short in a devastating act of violence. On October 29, 2013, Fields, along with five members of his family, became the victims of a mass shooting that stemmed from a domestic dispute. The horrific event unfolded at their home on Callison Highway in Greenwood County, leaving a community in shock and a family shattered.
The perpetrator was identified as 27-year-old Bryan Eugene Sweatt.
The motive for the killings was a custody dispute over his 7-month-old daughter with Chandra Marie Fields, Richard's 26-year-old daughter. Sweatt had become increasingly upset about not being able to see his child. The situation escalated tragically when Sweatt went to the Fields' residence armed with a. 44-caliber handgun.
Inside the home, a scene of unimaginable horror unfolded. Sweatt shot and killed Richard Allen Fields; his 49-year-old wife, Melissa Kay Fields; his daughter, Chandra Marie Fields; and his two young grandsons, 11-year-old Tariq Kenyon Robinson and 9-year-old William Asa Robinson. Some of the victims were shot multiple times, and there were no signs of a struggle inside the house. Before law enforcement arrived, four children who were in the home managed to escape to a neighbor's house and reported that a shot had been fired.
The incident began with Sweatt himself calling 911, stating he was thinking of harming himself. During the call, a woman could be heard crying and pleading with him in the background. A short time later, a neighbor called 911 to report the arrival of the four children seeking help. When a SWAT team entered the residence, they discovered the six deceased individuals, including Sweatt, who had taken his own life. The investigation concluded that it was a murder-suicide, and with the suspect also deceased, the case was closed.
