In the quiet community of Bradley, South Carolina, a horrific series of events unfolded, leaving a family shattered and a community in mourning. Melissa Kay Fields, a 49-year-old woman, was tragically killed on October 29, 2013, in a violent rampage that also claimed the lives of four other family members.
The devastating incident was a mass murder-suicide perpetrated by Bryan Sweatt.
The violence stemmed from a domestic dispute with his ex-girlfriend, 26-year-old Chandra Marie Fields, who was Melissa's daughter. In addition to Melissa and Chandra, the victims included Melissa's 51-year-old husband, Richard Allen Fields, and Chandra's two young sons, 11-year-old Tariq Kenyon Robinson and 9-year-old William Asa Robinson.
Reports indicate that the tragedy was set in motion by an ongoing custody battle between Chandra Fields and Bryan Sweatt. On that fateful day, one of the children from the home fled to a neighbor, reporting that Sweatt had shot their mother and restrained their grandparents. When law enforcement arrived at the residence on Callison Highway, they discovered the bodies of the five victims. Bryan Sweatt was also found deceased, having taken his own life after the killings. The community was left to grapple with the sudden and senseless loss of an entire family.
