In the late hours of May 5, 2015, the life of 34-year-old Herman Gaston Jr. was tragically cut short in what remains an unsolved mystery. A resident of Okatie, South Carolina, Gaston was driving within his own University Park community when the fatal event unfolded. Around 11 p.m., he had left his apartment with the simple intention of going to a nearby gas station.
It was a routine trip that would end in a devastating and abrupt act of violence.
Shortly after Gaston departed, the quiet of the evening was broken by the sound of a loud 'bang,' immediately followed by the jarring screech of tires. This disturbance prompted calls to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, reporting a vehicle crash at the intersection of Parkside Way and University Parkway. When deputies and fire medics arrived at the scene, they discovered the grim reality of the situation. Herman Gaston had been shot. Despite the immediate efforts of paramedics, he could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.
