On the evening of August 10, 2015, a violent confrontation unfolded on Collins Street in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, resulting in the death of 23-year-old Dominic Marquis Goodwin. Officers from the Myrtle Beach Police Department were dispatched to the scene around 7:20 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting near an apartment complex. Upon arrival, first responders discovered the male victim lying in a grassy area across the street from the address of 607 Collins Street.
He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Horry County Deputy Coroner.
The investigation revealed that the incident began as a physical assault involving multiple individuals. Detectives learned that before the shooting, Goodwin was allegedly attacked by a group in front of the apartment building. Witnesses provided critical information to law enforcement, stating they observed a man, later identified as Damiean Lamont Cantey, shoot Goodwin. One witness reported seeing Cantey stand over the victim after the shot was fired before fleeing the area in a Toyota Camry.
Police quickly identified and apprehended a suspect involved in the initial altercation. Christopher Columbus White III, aged 30 at the time and a resident of Kingstree, was arrested on August 13, 2015. Authorities noted that when first questioned, White denied knowledge of the incident and attempted to conceal head injuries he had sustained during the fight by wearing a hat. He was subsequently charged with murder and obstructing justice for allegedly participating in the assault that led to Goodwin's death and for hiding information from investigators.
Following the identification of the alleged shooter, police launched a search for Damiean Lamont Cantey, who was 36 years old and resided in Forestbrook. After being at large for nearly three weeks, Cantey was taken into custody on the morning of August 29, 2015. He was booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center and charged with murder, as well as possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
