In the quiet town of Chesnee, South Carolina, a gathering of friends for a card game took a tragic turn, ending the life of 23-year-old Shelby Elizabeth Sims. On the early morning of Saturday, November 14, 2015, Shelby was fatally shot at her home on Overcreek Road.
The events of that night unfolded during what should have been a casual get-together. According to the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office, Shelby's husband, 25-year-old Jeremy Sims, had been drinking and smoking marijuana.
Witnesses reported that he was waving a handgun around during the card game. The reckless display of the firearm resulted in it discharging, striking his wife.
Shelby Elizabeth Wolfe Sims, born on January 1, 1992, in Spartanburg, was a mother to a young son. Her mother and a child were present in the home at the time of the shooting but were unharmed.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Jeremy Sims was arrested and charged with murder. He was subsequently booked into the Spartanburg County jail. The community was left to mourn the sudden and violent loss of a young woman, with funeral services held the following week at Shiloh Memorial Cemetery.
