In a quiet home on Wild Horse Road in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, the life of 17-year-old Rae Kianna Prock came to a tragic end. On February 3, 2016, the teenager was discovered with a single gunshot wound to her head. She was rushed to a hospital in Savannah but succumbed to her injuries the following day, February 4, 2016. A female and a former resident of Redmond, Oregon, Rae had moved to Hilton Head just a month prior to live with her stepsisters, seeking a fresh start and proximity
to family.
The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation into the shooting, interviewing numerous witnesses and individuals associated with Rae. It was determined that at least one other person, a male, was present at the residence when the incident occurred. This individual, identified as Rae's boyfriend, was questioned by investigators and released without any criminal charges being filed. His mother later stated that her son claimed Rae had taken her own life and that if he had been responsible, he would not have been allowed to come home that day.
Following an evaluation of the evidence, the Beaufort County Coroner's Office officially ruled Rae Prock's death a suicide. This conclusion, however, was met with conflicting emotions from her grieving family. Her mother, Alicia Keota-Prock, expressed that while it was difficult to believe, she had to accept the official finding, acknowledging her daughter had been unhappy. In contrast, Rae's father, Robert Prock, initially voiced strong disbelief that his daughter would take her own life, stating it was not in her character. In the depths of his grief, Robert Prock was later arrested and charged with first-degree assault and battery for an incident at a local bar where he was reportedly intoxicated and distraught over his daughter's death.
