In the quiet community of Taylors, South Carolina, a life was tragically cut short on a February weekend in 2016. Anquan Lemuel Gambrell, a 23-year-old man, was fatally wounded in a shooting that stemmed from a dispute. The incident unfolded in the early evening of Saturday, February 6, 2016, at an apartment complex on Old Spartanburg Road. What began as a verbal altercation escalated quickly and violently, shattering the evening's calm.
Deputies from the Greenville County Sheriff's
Office were dispatched to the scene following reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered that Gambrell had sustained at least one gunshot wound. He was rushed to Greenville Memorial Hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Anquan Lemuel Gambrell succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead the following day, on Sunday, February 7, 2016. His death was ruled a homicide.
The investigation into Gambrell's death moved swiftly. Investigators identified Na'eem Johnson Okine, who was 20 years old at the time, as the primary suspect in the shooting. It was determined that a verbal disagreement between Okine and Gambrell had preceded the fatal gunfire. Within a short period, deputies located and apprehended Okine, taking him into custody without incident.
Following his arrest, Na'eem Johnson Okine was charged with the murder of Anquan Lemuel Gambrell. He was also charged with possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Okine was subsequently booked into the Greenville County Detention Center, where he was held as the legal process began to unfold, leaving a community to mourn the senseless loss of a young life.
