In the quiet landscape of Starr, South Carolina, a tragic hunting trip unfolded, ending the life of 38-year-old Kenneth Jason Young on the evening of Wednesday, September 13, 2017. Young, a resident of Starr, was out on private property hunting for hogs. What began as a recreational pursuit turned fatal in an instant of mistaken identity.
Another hunter, a woman who was also on the property with permission, was using a thermal or night-vision scope to scan the area for wild hogs.
Through the lens of her scope, she perceived a figure moving on all fours in the grass. Believing it to be her intended prey, she fired a single shot. The shot was fatal, striking Young in the head.
Emergency services were called to the scene near Gentry Road around 8:30 p.m. An investigation was launched by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the Anderson County Sheriff's Office. The deputy coroner stated that foul play was not suspected in the incident.
The authorities did not release the name of the female hunter, and no charges were filed in what was determined to be a tragic hunting accident. Kenneth Jason Young, born on November 9, 1977, was remembered by his family and friends in a graveside service a few days after his untimely death.
