In a case that left a community searching for answers, 38-year-old Jamell Reggie Carter, a Black/African American male from Ehrhardt, South Carolina, was found deceased on January 4, 2019. His body, along with that of 35-year-old Janis Quintero Natos, was discovered in the serene setting of Rivers Bridge State Park in Bamberg County. The discovery was made by a park ranger, bringing a grim end to a search that began weeks earlier.
The couple had been reported missing on December 12,
2018, the last day they were seen at their home in Bamberg. Family members reported that their departure seemed sudden. Natos had left her purse behind, and Carter had left without his medication. Their disappearances prompted an investigation that would ultimately lead to the tragic finding in the state park, a location that commemorates a Civil War battle.
An autopsy revealed that both Jamell Reggie Carter and Janis Quintero Natos had died from gunshot wounds to the head, and their deaths were officially ruled as homicides. The Bamberg County Coroner stated that it appeared they were killed on the same day they went missing. Due to the condition of the bodies when found, they were described as badly decomposed.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division took the lead in the homicide investigation. Despite their efforts, no arrests have been made in connection with the double murder.
