In the rural community of Andrews, South Carolina, 64-year-old Irene Pressley, a dedicated mail carrier for 22 years, began her route on what seemed to be an ordinary Monday in September 2019. Known for her kindness and years of service, her day took a tragic and violent turn. She was discovered later that afternoon, shot to death inside her postal vehicle on a remote road in Williamsburg County.
The incident, initially a mystery, was quickly determined to be a homicide, launching an intensive investigation involving local and federal authorities.
The investigation revealed a sinister plot that unfolded along Pressley's mail route. Two men, Trevor Raekwon Seward, then 22, and Jerome Terrell Davis, then 27, were awaiting a package containing marijuana that was being shipped to Seward's residence from California. When Pressley, following postal regulations, did not deliver the package and instead left a notice for pickup at the post office, the men became determined to intercept it. After a brief and unsuccessful confrontation with Pressley, Seward armed himself with an AR-15 rifle. Davis then drove Seward to a location where they could ambush the unsuspecting mail carrier.
As Irene Pressley continued her deliveries, she was ambushed by Seward, who fired approximately twenty rounds into her vehicle, striking her multiple times. Following the shooting, Seward entered her vehicle and drove it about three miles away to a secluded access road. There, he abandoned her and the vehicle in a ditch, rifling through the mail in search of the package of marijuana or other valuables before fleeing. A crucial piece of evidence, a fingerprint belonging to Seward, was found on a piece of mail recovered near Pressley's body, directly linking him to the crime.
Within weeks of the murder, both Trevor Seward and Jerome Davis were arrested and faced state charges, which were later followed by a federal indictment. The charges included murder, robbery, and conspiracy to distribute marijuana. Investigators determined that the motive for the brutal killing was the duo's attempt to retrieve the package of marijuana. In June 2023, Trevor Raekwon Seward was convicted for the murder of Irene Pressley and sentenced to life in federal prison, along with a consecutive 20-year sentence for using a firearm in furtherance of a violent crime. Jerome Terrell Davis pleaded guilty to robbery and conspiracy charges and was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison. A third individual from California, Ricky Jesus Barajas, was also charged in connection with the drug conspiracy.
