In the late evening hours of a December Sunday in Columbia, South Carolina, 53-year-old Paul Swatsell was working his shift as a driver for the Checker Yellow Cab Company. A group of five teenagers hailed his taxi at a Waffle House on Broad River Road around 9:30 p.m. Swatsell drove them to the 4300 block of Brookridge Drive, a residential area in the northern part of the city. It was there that the ride took a fatal turn.
