In the early morning hours of January 9, 2021, the life of 29-year-old Devonne J. Mayfield, a Black/African American male from Summerville, South Carolina, was tragically cut short. The fatal incident unfolded in the parking lot of an Advance Auto Parts store located at 4892 Ashley Phosphate Road in North Charleston. It was there, at approximately 2:58 a.m., that the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office responded to a call and discovered Mayfield suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:45 a.m.
The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office and the Dorchester County Coroner's Office immediately launched an investigation into the shooting. An autopsy was scheduled for January 13, 2021, at the Medical University of South Carolina to determine the precise cause of death. As authorities delved into the circumstances surrounding Mayfield's homicide, they publicly released few details about a potential motive or any individuals who may have been involved, describing the case as an active and ongoing investigation.
Adding a layer of complexity to the investigation was the fact that Devonne Mayfield had a previous encounter with law enforcement. In January 2019, he had been arrested in connection with a 2017 homicide that occurred at the Waters Edge Apartments in Summerville. This prior legal issue was considered by investigators as they explored various angles and potential connections in his own untimely death. To date, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests, identified suspects, or legal proceedings directly related to the murder of Devonne J. Mayfield. The case remains open as law enforcement continues to seek information that could bring resolution to his family and the community.
