In the winter of 2021, the community of Orangeburg, South Carolina, was shaken by the violent death of 25-year-old Deangelo Bryant. On the night of Friday, December 17th, Bryant, a Black male, and another man, 27-year-old Jamarious Loynes, were found fatally shot. The Orangeburg County Coroner's Office later confirmed that both men died at the scene from gunshot wounds.
Deangelo, known affectionately as 'Dee,' was a well-regarded figure in his community, remembered for his athletic
abilities and warm personality. A 2015 graduate of Estill High School, he excelled in football, basketball, and track, earning a scholarship to play football at the College of the Siskiyous in California. He was also a devoted father. His sudden and tragic death left his family, friends, and the broader community in mourning, highlighting the devastating impact of gun violence.
In the wake of the double homicide, law enforcement launched an investigation to bring those responsible to justice. Their efforts led to the arrest of 27-year-old Deandre Deangelo Sumpter. He was subsequently charged with two counts of murder and two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime in connection with the deaths of Bryant and Loynes. The arrest marked a significant development in the case, offering a measure of hope for closure to the grieving families.
