On a cold December evening in 2021, traffic along Shady Grove Road, a two-lane route that winds through the woods north of St. George, South Carolina, moved as usual through the early winter darkness. Behind the wheel of his car was Edwin Montez Boyd, a 44-year-old Black man from the small Dorchester County town he had long called home.
