On a tragic day in January 2022, the life of 22-year-old Kalila Rubye Heyward Saunders, a female resident of St. Helena Island, South Carolina, was cut short in a violent encounter within the supposed safety of her own home. The events of January 26 unfolded into a grim tableau that would also claim the lives of her 55-year-old mother, Robin Saunders, and Kalila's 24-year-old estranged boyfriend, Jaquan Sanders of Seabrook.
That morning, a distressing call was made from the Saunders'
residence on Eddings Point Road, reporting a break-in. The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene and discovered a grim sight. The front door showed signs of forced entry, and inside, they found Jaquan Sanders unresponsive in an upstairs hallway, a pistol still in his hand. In a nearby bedroom, both Kalila and Robin Saunders were found with gunshot wounds. A second pistol, belonging to Kalila, was also recovered at the scene.
Emergency medical services pronounced Kalila Saunders and Jaquan Sanders dead at the scene. Robin Saunders was rushed to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries a short time later. The preliminary investigation by the Sheriff's Office strongly indicated that Jaquan Sanders had unlawfully and forcibly entered the home armed, which led to an exchange of gunfire. It is believed that either Kalila or her mother, in an act of self-defense, returned fire.
As of early February 2022, the investigation was ongoing, pending the results of forensic autopsies scheduled to be performed at the Medical University of South Carolina. Authorities stated that they believed all individuals involved in the shooting had been identified and that there was no further threat to the public. While the initial findings pointed towards a home invasion and a defensive shooting, the final conclusions of the investigation have not been publicly released. The community of St. Helena Island was left to mourn the profound loss of three lives in this tragic incident.
