On the early morning of May 21, 2022, violence erupted in the downtown area of Spartanburg, South Carolina, claiming the life of a local resident. Dearrius Lynell Bobo, a 31-year-old Black male, was spending time on Magnolia Street, a busy corridor known for its bars and restaurants. Around 2:20 a.m., the atmosphere shifted when a dispute broke out among a group of people gathering in the area.
Following the initial altercation, the situation appeared to de-escalate momentarily as individuals began to disperse.
As the group moved along Magnolia Street toward West St. John Street, a vehicle approached them, reigniting the danger. Witnesses reported that a red Toyota sedan with tinted windows pulled up to the pedestrians. Without warning, an occupant inside the vehicle opened fire on the group. The sudden gunfire struck Bobo in the upper body, inflicting fatal injuries. Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find him lying on the sidewalk, but he had already succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead before he could be transported to a hospital.
The shooting also resulted in injuries to a second person who was with the group. This individual was treated by paramedics and rushed to a local hospital for further medical care, though their identity and long-term condition were not immediately released to the public. The chaotic nature of the event left the community in shock, as the downtown district was typically considered a safe environment for nightlife and social gatherings.
In the wake of the homicide, investigators from the Spartanburg Police Department launched a search for the red Toyota sedan and its occupants. Law enforcement officials appealed to the public for any leads, urging witnesses who had been in the vicinity of the bars and restaurants to come forward. Despite the presence of numerous potential witnesses in the busy district, initial reports indicated that no immediate arrests were made, and police continued their efforts to identify the shooter responsible for the attack.
