Patrolman Raphael A. Girard, a 29-year-old officer with the Hannibal Police Department in Missouri, tragically succumbed to gunshot wounds on December 16, 1900. The incident that led to his death occurred on October 7, 1900, when he attempted to arrest two trespassers in the Burlington Railroad yards. During the confrontation, Girard was shot, resulting in paralysis. Despite medical efforts, he passed away two months later due to complications from his injuries.
