In the early autumn of 1907, a violent encounter in Aurora, Missouri, claimed the life of Deputy City Marshal John Franklin Chambers. The 32-year-old lawman was on duty on September 19th when he was approached by a man with whom he had a confrontation the previous night. The assailant had concealed a gun within a newspaper and, without warning, shot Deputy Marshal Chambers four times in the street.
