In the early autumn of 1907, a violent encounter in Aurora, Missouri, claimed the life of Deputy City Marshal John Franklin Chambers. The 32-year-old lawman was on duty on September 19th when he was approached by a man with whom he had a confrontation the previous night. The assailant had concealed a gun within a newspaper and, without warning, shot Deputy Marshal Chambers four times in the street.
John Franklin Chambers, born on March 22, 1877, was a husband and a father to five
children at the time of his death. He had been serving as a deputy marshal in Aurora, a role he held with a sense of duty and commitment to his community. His sudden and violent death sent shockwaves through the small Missouri town.
Following the shooting, the man who had accosted and killed Deputy Marshal Chambers was arrested and subsequently stood trial for the murder. Despite the public nature of the attack, the suspect was ultimately acquitted of the crime. Deputy Marshal Chambers was survived by his wife and their five children. He was laid to rest in Maple Park Cemetery in Aurora.
