Deputy Marshal Elmer Magruder, aged 24, tragically lost his life on December 18, 1908, in Higbee, Missouri. The incident occurred during an attempted jailbreak at the Higbee Jail. Magruder and another marshal were overseeing three burglary suspects who had been arrested the previous night for robbing the Wabash depot in Salisbury.
