On the night of September 30, 1981, Sergeant Jesse L. Henderson of the Wellston Police Department was on duty in Wellston, Missouri, when he encountered a fatal situation that would leave a lasting mark on the community and his family. The 49-year-old officer, who had previously served as the department's chief for over a decade before returning to the rank of sergeant, was en route to answer a burglar alarm at Vijon Laboratories around 4:35 a.m.
While responding to that call, he noticed suspicious activity at Gene's Package Liquor Store located at 6237 Plymouth Avenue and decided to investigate the situation immediately.
As Sergeant Henderson pulled his unmarked police vehicle up to the liquor store to interrupt the burglary in progress, he was met with sudden and deadly violence. Before he could fully exit his patrol car or draw his weapon, he was shot once in the chest by one of the perpetrators. He was later found lying on his side in uniform next to his vehicle with the motor still running and the lights on, his unfired revolver discovered underneath his body. A rookie officer from a neighboring jurisdiction, who had spoken with Henderson only minutes prior at a convenience store, responded to the 'officer down' call and found the sergeant critically wounded at the scene.
Following the shooting, a chaotic scene unfolded as other officers arrived and reportedly exchanged gunfire with the fleeing suspects. The investigation initially led to the arrest of three individuals in connection with the murder. Authorities charged one adult and one juvenile with capital murder, believing they had apprehended the group responsible for the ambush. The only physical clue left behind at the scene was a brown hat that investigators believed belonged to one of the suspects involved in the robbery and subsequent shooting.
Despite the initial arrests and charges, the legal proceedings took an unexpected turn that denied the family closure. The charges against the suspects were reportedly dropped later without a public explanation, leaving the case unresolved in the eyes of the law. Sergeant Henderson, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, was survived by his wife and eleven children, who were left with unanswered questions regarding the loss of their father. He was laid to rest at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, honored for his fourteen years of service to the Wellston community.
